TRAINING

I have been fortunate to have had the opportunity to learn throughout my career, quite often when I was supposed to be teaching others.

I developed full-day Asphalt Maintenance & Rehabilitation, Pavement Preservation, Chip Seal, Micro and Slurry Seal, and related classes for the Wyoming T2 Center and delivered them at multiple locations across Wyoming over the last five years. I have developed and presented several professional development courses for the Wyoming Society of Professional Engineers and ACEC. I have developed and delivered a Cost-Effective Low-Volume Pavement Treatments and an Asphalt Paving Technology course for the Nevada Local Technical Assistance Program. I updated and delivered Nevada LTAP’s All About Roadway Materials course, and have developed and delivered a course on HMA Smoothness for the California Asphalt Pavement Association, and have updated that course to keep pace with changes in specifications and technology and am delivering it across California.

I served as subject matter expert and Certified Instructor for delivery of the National Highway Institute (NHI) courses Asphalt Pavement Recycling Technology, Hot Mix Asphalt Construction, HMA Pavement Evaluation and Rehabilitation and Hot Mix Asphalt Production Facilities on an on-call basis. These multi-day courses are typically delivered to state transportation and similar agencies at locations across the country, and they quickly taught me to not assume I knew anything about how pavements were constructed in other areas.

I developed and delivered technical and non-technical rubberized asphalt concrete (RAC) training sessions for local government, contractor, and consultant personnel at over 50 locations I assisted local government with construction management and inspection of RAC projects. I was able to review and provide recommendations for improvements to specifications and review submittals/post-construction issues for at least a dozen agencies. I assembled a listing of typical specifications for a variety of rubberized asphalt uses, including surface treatment, wearing courses, and stress-absorbing membrane interlayers (SAMI), and was able to conduct technical and non-technical investigations of RAC and pavement-related issues.

I served as a member of the six-person Project Technical Panel for the Airfield Asphalt Pavement Technology Program (AAPTP) Project 04-05, Improved Performance of Longitudinal Joints on Asphalt Airfields. As a member of the panel, I was responsible for oversight and technical direction of the research and of the content and organization of the final report, which includes a “best practices” guide. The final report is available on the AAPTP website.
